Great recording!
In many ways I prefer this to the SBD. It doesn't have those harsh cuts and once the ear get accustomed, it's a very nice recording.

Nothing beats a freebie
This was actually a sound check, a rehearsal, a freebie, or whatever you want to call it. I was there. The music was all supposed to be Saturday, the 28th, but by late afternoon Friday, there were probably already a quarter million people there, so the band decided to noodle around. I seem to remember the high points actually being higher than Saturday afternoon. Didn't Bobby somewhere say "you'll forgive us" for the laid back sound check nature of the set.
And if you want the epitome of the Dead, perhaps the highest point of that year for this fan, who's seen them hundreds of times, take a listen to the last six or seven minutes of "Jam" (right before Wharf Rat). When you look up Grateful Dead in the dictionary of rock and roll, that clip will likely play!

Nice recording...
...given the crowded, muddy circumstances 32 years ago today. In fact, this stacks up well against the SBD in that the sound is both full, and adds some crowd reaction. It also doesn't have the harsh cuts in Bird Song, 1/2 Step, and the Big Jam present in the SBD. (Note: I haven't heard the Charlie Miller SBD version, just the other older one, on both cassette and SHN)
Judging by the patches using the other AUD version, this one sounds much better to my ears, and definitely deserves more attention than it's gotten (approx 160 directory views as of this review :( )...
